Giants' Deone Bucannon will play against Lions Sunday

The New York Giants’ newest acquisition, moneybacker Deone Bucannon, is all set to play on Sunday after signing this past Tuesday. The former Buccaneer was released by Tampa Bay on October 9 and immediately the talks around the hybrid defensive back/linebacker signing with Big Blue began to spread.

“Yeah, he’ll be active. He’ll be involved. He did a good job this week. Again, there was some familiarity with our system and I think he handled his workload really well,” head coach Pat Shurmur told reporters on Friday.

Bucannon’s versatility to lineup in multiple spots makes him desirable for a Giants team with defensive coordinator James Bettcher. Bettcher was responsible for turning him into a hybrid defensive back/linebacker back when they were together in Arizona.

Buchanon isn’t the first player to follow Bettcher to New York. Last offseason, Josh Mauro and Kareem Martin came to Big Blue via free agency, and Olsen Pierre and Markus Golden came over this offseason.

Bucannon playing Sunday may give the Giants a little extra spark as he is certainly out to prove his worth the rest of the season. He has made it clear that he is a piece of the puzzle. The Giants have had their share of issues on defense, hopefully a versatile defender like Bucannon can have an immediate impact and help Big Blue moving forward.
