The New York Giants had an open spot on their practice squad after waiving linebacker Jake Carlock earlier this week, and his replacement is curious to say the least.

Rather than hanging onto the Swiss Army Knife that was Carlock, the Giants instead decided to give that practice squad spot to rookie punter Sean Smith.

Smith was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent out of Dayton in August. He had previously attended their rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis.

During his college career, Smith was a four-time first-team All-Pioneer Football League selection and set a school record for punting average (45.4 yards) as a senior in 2018.

With a healthy Riley Dixon serving as the Giants’ punter this season — and playing relatively well — the addition of Smith is a head-scratcher to say the least.

Of course, the addition of Smith, who is a left-footed punter, may just be to help the team’s return men prepare for Dallas Cowboys punter Chris Jones, who is also a lefty.
